The Vatican has announced that Carlo Acutis, a millennial, will be officially declared a saint in September.

The announcement of Acutis’s canonization, scheduled for September 7th, was made to a gathering of cardinals.

Acutis passed away in 2006 at the age of 15 in Northern Italy, succumbing to leukemia, according to reports from the Associated Press.

Prior to the announcement on April 21st, Acutis’s canonization was initially planned for April 27th, coinciding with the Vatican’s Jubilee of Teenagers.

During his lifetime, Acutis balanced the activities of a typical teenager with dedication to his church and community.

The Associated Press notes that Acutis was a catechist at his local church and volunteered to support the homeless.

Acutis also employed his computer skills to develop a website documenting over 100 eucharistic miracles recognized by the Catholic Church.

Acutis’s mother, Antonia, attributed the first instance of intercession to her son, claiming it occurred four years after his death.

“After Carlo’s passing at 39, I considered having more children, thinking I was still young enough. However, it didn’t happen. I even started the process of adopting a child, but it proved difficult in Italy. I had given up hope of conceiving naturally,” she recounted. “Then, I had a dream where Carlo reassured me that I would become a mother again and not to worry. A month later, I discovered I was pregnant.”

According to the National Catholic Register, a second miracle attributed to Acutis’s intercession was recognized on May 23, 2024.

This miracle involved Valeria Valverde, a 21-year-old woman from Costa Rica.

Valverde suffered a severe brain injury in a bicycle accident in 2022 while residing in Florence. Her prognosis was initially grim.

However, she experienced a complete recovery after her mother visited Acutis’s tomb and prayed for his intercession, according to the National Catholic Register.

Acutis’s tomb in Assisi is a popular pilgrimage site for Catholics, especially young people.

Acutis will be canonized alongside Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati.
