Vatican: Pope Francis’ Condition Improves, No Longer Needs Breathing Machine
The Vatican announced Wednesday that Pope Francis’s health is still improving, and he no longer requires non-invasive mechanical ventilation at night to aid his breathing.
According to a Vatican medical bulletin, the 88-year-old pontiff is also gradually decreasing his need for high-flow supplemental oxygen during the day. The Holy See press office stated that his double pneumonia infection is being managed effectively, although it has not been completely eradicated.
Francis commemorated Mass on Wednesday, a significant feast day and the 12th anniversary of his installation as pope.
Francis has been receiving treatment at Rome’s Gemelli hospital since February 14 for a complex lung infection that developed into pneumonia in both lungs.
He has not required the use of a mechanical ventilation mask for the past two nights, and doctors have stated that its use has been “suspended.”
The Vatican is also scaling back its medical updates as Francis makes steady progress in his recovery. The next update is not anticipated before Monday.
