Video Shows Ukraine’s Underwater Attack on Key Bridge Linking Russia and Crimea

The Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) reported that a significant underwater explosion targeting the bridge connecting Russia to Crimea has left it in a “state of emergency” on Tuesday.

This unexpected detonation follows a series of coordinated Ukrainian drone strikes, which are believed to have destroyed numerous Russian bomber jets and surveillance aircraft at five military airfields deep within Russian territory.

SBU Lt. Gen. Vasily Malyuk stated, “Illegal objects of the Russian Federation have no place on our territory. The Crimean Bridge is a legitimate target, especially as the enemy uses it for logistical support of their troops. Crimea is Ukraine, and any occupation presence will be met with a strong response.”

The SBU indicated that approximately 2,500 pounds of explosives were detonated underwater along the Kerch Bridge. Footage showed an explosion near a bridge pillar, followed by people inspecting the damage on the bridge’s surface.

According to the SBU, Malyuk oversaw the operation, which involved months of preparation.

“The bridge is in a state of emergency,” the SBU announced.

The Associated Press reported that traffic on the Kerch Bridge was delayed for three hours earlier today.

The bridge reportedly reopened before being closed again.

The SBU stated that no civilians were harmed in the explosion.

Malyuk stated that they had previously targeted the bridge in 2022 and 2023, and this underwater operation continues that practice.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also reported that Russia struck the northeastern city of Sumy, targeting the city and its streets with rocket artillery.

Zelenskyy said that a rescue operation is underway with many wounded and three confirmed deaths. He expressed condolences to the families, and said that all emergency services are assisting.

Zelenskyy added that one shell was a dud, but pierced the wall of an apartment on the 9th floor, and that “alone says everything one needs to know about Russia’s so-called ‘desire’ to end this war.”
