Washington D.C. Shooting: Israeli Embassy Staff Killed Amid History of Attacks

The double killing in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday is the latest in a series of attacks targeting Israeli interests globally.

The victims, a recently engaged couple, have been identified as [Victims’ Names]. They were killed outside the Capital Jewish Museum. The suspected shooter was apprehended by security after shouting, “Free, free Palestine!”

The shooting occurred amid heightened tensions over Israel’s operations in Gaza this week, though this is not the first time the D.C. embassy has been targeted since the October 7, 2023, attack on Israel.

Since 1969, there have been at least 31 terror attacks targeting Israeli embassies and diplomatic staff worldwide. Here are some major incidents:

In February of last year, a U.S. Air Force member, [Airman’s Name], self-immolated outside the embassy in an apparent protest.

The 25-year-old died, but no embassy staff were injured.

On Feb. 13, 2012, a bombing targeted an Israeli diplomatic vehicle in Delhi, India, seriously injuring one woman. This was the last known attack on Israeli embassy personnel. 

An attack outside the Israeli and American embassies in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, on July 30, 2004, resulted in the deaths of the Israeli ambassador’s bodyguard and four local police officers.

On February 17, 1999, approximately 100 rioters stormed the Israeli Consulate General in Berlin, armed with clubs, hammers, and iron bars, before taking a woman hostage. Three rioters were killed during the incident.

A bomb exploded outside the Israeli Embassy in London on July 26, 1994, injuring several embassy employees.

One of the most devastating attacks on an Israeli embassy occurred in Buenos Aires, Argentina. A bombing on injured approximately 300 people and killed 29, including nine embassy employees, elderly residents of a nearby nursing home, and schoolchildren on a passing bus.

Ten days prior, on March 7 in Ankara, Turkey, Ehud Sadan, the Israeli embassy’s security chief, was killed by a car bomb. Hezbollah and the Islamic Revenge Organization claimed responsibility.

On June 4, 1982, the Israeli Ambassador to the UK, Shlomo Argov, was seriously wounded in a shooting as he left a diplomatic event in London. Three individuals were apprehended and sentenced to up to 35 years in prison.

An assassination attempt was made on Israeli Ambassador Ephraim Eldar in Lisbon, Portugal, on November 13, 1979. The ambassador, his chauffeur, and a local policeman were injured; a guard at the embassy was killed.

On December 28, 1972, four terrorists seized the Israeli embassy in , taking six embassy personnel hostage. They were reportedly released 19 hours later. 

Yosef Alon, an Israeli air force attaché to the embassy in Washington, D.C., was fatally shot outside his home on July 1, 1973.  The murder was believed to be retaliation for Israel’s killing of the leader of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine.

The Israeli Consul-General, Efraim Elrom, was assassinated in Istanbul, Turkey, on May 28, 1971, by the Turkish Liberation Army.

On May 4, 1970, two armed Palestinians infiltrated the Israeli Consulate in Asuncion, Paraguay, and opened fire, killing an Israeli secretary, Edna Pe’er, and injuring a local worker.

On September 8, 1969, a series of coordinated bombings targeted two Israeli embassies in the Hague, Netherlands, and Bonn, Germany, along with Israel’s El Al airline in Brussels. The attacks occurred within minutes of each other.

While no one was injured in the embassy attacks, three El Al employees and a customer were injured in the Brussels bombing.
