World Leader Suspended After Leaked Phone Call Follows Deadly Border Conflict
Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra faced suspension from her duties on Tuesday, pending an ongoing ethics investigation stemming from a leaked phone call with a .
“My sole focus was on preventing difficulties and averting armed confrontation, ensuring our soldiers would not incur any losses. I would find it unacceptable if my words to the other leader were to lead to adverse consequences,” Paetongtarn stated, as reported by .
The nation’s Constitutional Court judges unanimously endorsed a petition accusing her of ethical breaches, yet voted 7–2 to suspend her, the Associated Press indicated. She was also granted just under two weeks, precisely 12 days, to furnish the court with her evidence.
This suspension follows a telephone conversation purportedly held between Paetongtarn and Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen.
The phone call, which triggered extensive public outcry and demonstrations, became a pivotal point after a May 2025 occurrence where the two nations engaged in a border disagreement that resulted in the death of one Cambodian soldier, the Associated Press reported.
Mao Phalla, spokesperson for the Cambodian army, stated that their forces were on a routine patrol when Thai troops commenced firing, according to the Associated Press. Conversely, the Thai military asserted that Cambodian troops had entered a contested zone and that their actions constituted a response to incoming fire.
Following the disclosure of the phone call, demonstrators filled Bangkok’s streets, demanding Paetongtarn’s removal from office.
“My genuine and absolute intention in the leaked conversation was to serve the nation by upholding our sovereignty and safeguarding the lives of all our military personnel,” Paetongtarn reportedly conveyed to reporters.
The nation has experienced its share of political upheaval in recent years. Last year, Paetongtarn’s predecessor, Srettha Thavisin, was similarly removed from office by the court due to an ethics violation.
