World Leaders, Including Trump, React to Passing of Pope Francis

Following the announcement of Pope Francis’s death on Monday, global leaders, including U.S. President Donald Trump, have released statements.

“Rest in Peace Pope Francis! God bless him and everyone who cherished him!” Trump stated on Truth Social.

Vice President , who recently met with the Pope on Easter, expressed his gratitude for the meeting, noting the pontiff’s apparent illness.

“I am saddened to hear of Pope Francis’s passing. My thoughts are with the millions of Christians worldwide who admired him. I was fortunate to see him yesterday, despite his visible illness. I will always remember his early COVID homily,” Vance shared on X, linking to the homily. “It was truly beautiful. May he rest in peace.”

The White House X account posted, “Rest in Peace, Pope Francis.”

conveyed his and his wife’s deep sorrow upon learning of the Pope’s passing.

“My wife and I were deeply saddened by the news of Pope Francis’s death. We are comforted that His Holiness was able to share an Easter Greeting with the Church and the world, whom he served with unwavering dedication throughout his life and ministry,” the king stated.

“His Holiness will be remembered for his compassion, his commitment to Church unity, and his tireless dedication to shared causes among people of faith and those of goodwill striving for the benefit of others. His belief in caring for Creation as an essential expression of faith in God resonated globally. Through his actions and concern for both people and the planet, he profoundly impacted countless lives.

“The Queen and I fondly remember our meetings with His Holiness over the years and were deeply touched by our visit with him earlier this month. We extend our heartfelt condolences and deepest sympathy to the Church he served with such determination and to the countless people worldwide who, inspired by his life, will mourn the devastating loss of this faithful follower of Jesus Christ.”

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer offered his country’s condolences.

“Deeply saddened by the death of His Holiness Pope Francis. His unwavering commitment to a fairer world will leave a lasting impact. On behalf of the British people, I offer my sincere condolences to the entire Catholic Church,” Starmer posted on X.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also commented.

“Today, the world grieves the loss of Pope Francis. His humility and pure love for the less fortunate inspired millions, extending far beyond the Catholic Church. My thoughts are with all who feel this profound loss. May they find comfort in the notion that Pope Francis’s legacy will continue to guide us toward a more just, peaceful, and compassionate world,” she shared on X.

Indian Prime Minister Narenda Modi posted on X: “Deeply saddened by the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis. In this time of grief and remembrance, my sincere condolences to the global Catholic community. Pope Francis will be remembered by millions worldwide as a beacon of compassion, humility, and spiritual courage. From a young age, he dedicated himself to realizing the ideals of Lord Christ. He diligently served the poor and downtrodden. He ignited a spirit of hope for those who were suffering.

“I fondly recall my meetings with him and was greatly inspired by his commitment to inclusive and comprehensive development. His affection for the people of India will always be cherished. May his soul find eternal peace in God’s embrace,” Modi added.

Israeli President Isaac Herzog expressed his condolences both in a post on X and during an event with U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee on Monday.

 “I extend my deepest condolences to the Christian world, especially the Christian communities in Israel – the Holy Land – on the loss of their great spiritual leader, His Holiness Pope Francis. A man of profound faith and boundless compassion, he dedicated his life to uplifting the poor and advocating for peace in a troubled world. He rightly recognized the importance of fostering strong ties with the Jewish world and promoting interfaith dialogue as a means to greater understanding and mutual respect,” Herzog stated in the post.

“I sincerely hope that his prayers for peace in the Middle East and for the safe return of the hostages will soon be answered. May his memory continue to inspire acts of kindness, unity, and hope.”

French President Emmanuel Macron tweeted, “From Buenos Aires to Rome, Pope Francis sought to bring joy and hope to the poorest through the Church, to unite people with each other and with nature. May this hope be endlessly reborn beyond him. To all Catholics, to a grieving world, my wife and I send our thoughts.”
