On Wednesday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy strongly condemned Russian President Vladimir Putin for the Christmas Day attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.

Zelenskyy described the attacks as inhumane, but insisted they wouldn’t spoil the Christmas spirit.

“Putin deliberately targeted Christmas with this attack. What could be more cruel? Over 70 missiles, including ballistic ones, and more than a hundred attack drones were used. Our energy infrastructure was the target; they are trying to plunge Ukraine into darkness,” he posted on X.

The Russian Defense Ministry confirmed a large-scale attack, stating that it targeted energy facilities supporting Ukraine’s military-industrial complex, according to Reuters.

“The strike achieved its objective. All targets were hit,” the ministry declared.

Ukraine’s air force reported that the attacks on fuel and energy sources involved 78 air, ground, and sea-launched missiles, along with 106 Shahed drones and other types of drones, according to The Associated Press.

“Sadly, there were impacts. Power outages are currently affecting several regions. Power crews are working diligently to restore service as quickly as possible,” Zelenskyy noted.

However, the Ukrainian president asserted that “Russian aggression will not defeat Ukraine nor ruin Christmas.”

The U.S. has provided billions of dollars in aid to support Ukraine’s war effort, which began in 2022. However, there is ongoing debate among Americans and their congressional representatives about continued U.S. aid to Ukraine.

, who will assume office on January 20, has advocated for a ceasefire and negotiations.

In a Truth Social post this month, Trump stated that “Zelenskyy and Ukraine are ready for a deal to end the conflict. They have suffered staggering losses of 400,000 soldiers, and countless civilians. An immediate ceasefire and negotiations are necessary.”
