Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned that peace talks excluding Ukraine’s involvement and the withdrawal of Russian troops from eastern Ukraine would create a dangerous precedent for global dictators.

In a Saturday interview, Zelenskyy expressed concern over direct US-Russia talks without Ukraine’s participation, stating that such discussions, while potentially beneficial for bilateral relations, would be perilous for all involved.

He argued that such talks would legitimize Russian President Vladimir Putin’s invasion, granting him impunity and rewarding his actions with compromise.

Zelenskyy emphasized that this would embolden other world leaders contemplating similar aggressive actions.

Zelenskyy’s remarks followed President Donald Trump’s Sunday announcement that his administration was holding talks with various parties, including Ukraine and Russia, and that these discussions were progressing well.

On Friday, Trump declined to confirm direct communication with Putin or specify the individuals involved in these talks, although he confirmed ongoing, significant discussions.

Trump’s special envoy for Ukraine and Russia, retired Lt. Gen. Keith Kellogg, stated on Friday that efforts to end the conflict were unified, highlighting the substantial US financial commitment ($174 billion) and the new geopolitical alliances formed.

Despite the US pledge of over $175 billion in military aid, Zelenskyy reported receiving significantly less, estimating military aid closer to $75 billion. The discrepancy remains unexplained, with the White House yet to respond to inquiries.

Kellogg asserted that Trump would lead the negotiations, emphasizing his experience and ability to leverage pressure effectively with both Ukraine and Russia.

While the specific methods of applying this pressure remain unspecified, both Putin and Zelenskyy have ruled out negotiations concerning Ukraine’s NATO membership.

Zelenskyy suggested that Trump could influence Putin by escalating sanctions on Russia’s economy and continuing military aid to Ukraine.

Zelenskyy further advocated for Ukraine’s NATO membership, describing it as the most cost-effective option for Ukraine’s allies.

Ukraine’s NATO membership would offer protection against future Russian invasions under Article Five’s collective defense clause. However, Putin has threatened nuclear escalation if Ukraine joins NATO.
