Zelenskyy Consults with Trump, Allies After Russia Peace Talks Fail to Yield Ceasefire

Following unsuccessful peace talks with Russia in Turkey on Friday, which failed to establish any ceasefire, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy spoke with President Trump and key Western allies from France, Germany, the U.K., and Poland.

Delegations from Ukraine and Russia convened in Turkey for the first time in three years, as Trump aims to encourage both countries to end the conflict swiftly.

“Spoke with the President of the United States along with President Macron, Federal Chancellor Merz, Prime Ministers Starmer and Tusk,” Zelenskyy stated in a Friday post on X, discussing the Istanbul meeting.

“Ukraine is prepared to take immediate actions to achieve genuine peace, and it is crucial that the international community maintains a firm stance,” he added. “Our position is that if the Russians refuse a complete and unconditional ceasefire and an end to hostilities, strict sanctions must be imposed.”

“Pressure on Russia must be sustained until it is willing to end the war,” Zelenskyy said, expressing gratitude to global supporters.

French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed Russia’s renewed rejection of a ceasefire, stating that Russia “refuses to respond to the unconditional ceasefire proposal put forward by the Americans and supported by Ukraine and the Europeans.”

According to Macron, “By rejecting the ceasefire and dialogue with Ukraine, Russia demonstrates a lack of desire for peace and is merely attempting to prolong the war,” adding that the U.S. and European allies must “define a united response.”

President Trump has not commented on the unsuccessful negotiations or his conversation with world leaders on Friday, and Fox News Digital’s request for comment from the White House has not yet been answered.

Instead, Trump reiterated his belief that a meeting between him and Putin is necessary for progress, telling reporters from the UAE on Friday, “We have to meet. He and I will meet. I think we’ll solve it.”

“Or maybe not, but at least we’ll know,” Trump continued. “And if we don’t solve it, [it’ll] be very interesting.”

Trump has not disclosed when he intends to meet with Putin or what actions he will take if Putin does not agree to end the war.

The talks, initially proposed by Putin last week, were advanced by Trump, who suggested the leaders of the warring nations should participate in the negotiations.

However, in a statement on Thursday, after officials from Russia, Ukraine, and the U.S. arrived in Turkey, the Kremlin confirmed that Putin would not attend, and the delegation would not be led by any high-ranking members of Putin’s administration – a move Zelenskyy interpreted as evidence of Russia’s lack of seriousness about a ceasefire.

The talks initially failed to occur on Thursday, leaving officials uncertain about whether discussions would take place at all. The negotiations were then rescheduled for Friday, but neither Zelenskyy nor Secretary of State Marco Rubio attended.
