BACOLOD City Vice Mayor El Cid Familiaran said Tuesday, June 29, that the political party of the late councilor Elmer Sy will nominate a candidate to replace him on his post.

Sy, 65, who tested positive for coronavirus, died on June 17.

Familiaran said that Sy’s wife and caregiver also tested positive for the virus and are now on recovery.

He said Sy’s remains were already cremated.

He added that it is the political party of Sy who will nominate and decide as to who will replace him, but he is not sure if Sy was a member of Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC) or the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban).

Councilor Renecito Novero earlier said that Sy, a dialysis patient survivor, started his political career in 1990s during the term of Mayor Evelio Leonardia.

Novero said Sy, who was serving his second term, was a silent worker. He was the chairperson of the City Council committee on public works and committee on fire, natural disasters, and calamities.

“He was a generous worker. We received several blood donors through his effort to help the people of Bacolod,” he said.

Sy was loved by Bacolodnons for being popularly known as a public servant of “less talk, more actions.”
