Yangliuqing Unveils Snake-Themed Woodblock Painting for Lunar New Year “`
TIANJIN, China, Jan. 29, 2025 — On January 26th, Huo Qingyou, a leading practitioner of Yangliuqing woodblock New Year paintings, unveiled a new artwork celebrating the Year of the Snake, marking the first Spring Festival since the art form’s inclusion in UNESCO’s intangible cultural heritage list.
Entitled “Golden Snake Brings Good Fortune,” the painting blends traditional techniques with modern creativity.
The design features the snake zodiac symbol artfully incorporated with the Chinese character for “fortune,” Fu.
Longevity peaches and reishi mushrooms represent long life and good fortune, while lotus leaves and flowers symbolize harmony and happiness. Bats are included as symbols of blessings.
The snake’s head is depicted in an abstract style, combining mystery and artistic appeal. The snake’s body is decorated with the Eight Immortals’ magic weapons and copper coins, representing wealth, creating a balance between traditional motifs and a contemporary aesthetic.
The Xiqing District publicity department notes that Yangliuqing woodblock New Year paintings were added to the national intangible cultural heritage list in 2006. Originating in the historic Yangliuqing town, this art form dates back to the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) and flourished during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), boasting a history of over four centuries.
