Cybersecurity threats advance at a dizzying speed—and often fly under the radar. Their invisibility, which makes them easy to overlook compared to tangible physical hazards, adds to their insidiousness. Driven by complacency and our inclination to stick to familiar habits, these threats grow more perilous each day.

Even with multiple breaches in the past year, many organizations still view cybersecurity as a compliance box to check instead of a critical operational priority. This mindset, however, can carry a heavy price tag. Globally, the average cost of a single data breach is roughly . In the U.S. alone, cyberattacks cost businesses over $10 million from March 2024 to February 2025.

Yet, far too many companies prioritize employee efficiency and convenience over cybersecurity best practices. For example, not enough businesses mandate multi-factor authentication (MFA) for logging into company devices—with authentication via a separate device being a key component. Integrating biometrics into login processes can both speed things up and boost security, but this demands investments in technology deployment and staff training.

By prioritizing employee convenience over proactive measures, companies are falling short. They need to take an offensive stance against the growing wave of hacker attacks.

As artificial intelligence (AI) progresses, companies that don’t treat cybersecurity with the same urgency as physical security face unprecedented exposure.

AI’s impact on cybersecurity

Cybersecurity risks are projected to increase in the near term, largely due to AI—this technology is expected to speed up the rate of cyberattacks and reshape the cybersecurity landscape in ways we haven’t fully grasped yet.

For example, deepfakes are set to grow more sophisticated and widespread. , an employee was duped into transferring $25 million to scammers who used deepfake versions of the company’s CFO and other colleagues to appear legitimate. Even though the request was out of the ordinary, the employee followed what seemed to be directives from a senior executive. Proper training and verification procedures could have prevented the fraud, but without knowing how advanced these tools have become, employees are at a major disadvantage.

In November, the world saw the first documented AI-led cyber-espionage campaign. Anthropic that state-backed attackers had circumvented the safety measures of the Claude Code model and used it to autonomously scan networks, exploit weaknesses, steal login credentials, and exfiltrate data—with the AI handling 80% to 90% of the operation. This incident rattled the cybersecurity community and underscored a larger truth: we still haven’t fully comprehended the emerging capabilities of advanced AI systems.

Simultaneously, entirely new forms of AI misuse are surfacing. One example is “vibe coding,” where people use AI to create functional code from basic instructions instead of relying on technical know-how. By reducing the barrier to entry, this ability allows less skilled actors to execute more sophisticated cyberattacks.

Unlike traditional threats, which depend heavily on human hackers manually testing systems, AI enables autonomous, adaptive, and large-scale operations. AI models can scan huge datasets, spot vulnerabilities in real time, adjust attacks on the fly, and avoid detection. This lets hackers launch stealthy, coordinated espionage campaigns across multiple organizations at once—significantly expanding the global threat landscape. And since AI can adapt during an operation, the signature-based defenses that once formed the backbone of cybersecurity are quickly losing their effectiveness.

Cybersecurity is no longer just about protecting against human attackers. It now involves facing intelligent systems that can operate faster and on a larger scale than any single hacker.

Cybersecurity’s challenging future

For cybersecurity teams, the message is unambiguous: AI must be a core component of their defensive toolkit. Stricter controls over AI model access, better prevention of jailbreaking attempts, and real-time detection systems that can spot machine-driven activity are now essential. Attackers have already adopted AI; if defenders don’t evolve at the same pace, they’ll be using outdated tools to fight tomorrow’s threats.

Equally important is increased collaboration between private companies, government agencies, and international partners. When dealing with technologies we haven’t fully mastered, shared intelligence and coordinated strategies are crucial. In this new landscape, the combination of seasoned human judgment and AI’s analytical speed will be our most effective defense against an ever-more autonomous and sophisticated threat environment.

While the surge in AI-powered attacks can seem overwhelming, it’s key to remember that organizations aren’t helpless. Many of the best defenses are already available—they just need to be strengthened and applied consistently. The first step for corporate leaders is to stop ignoring the problem.
