Democrats Hail Nancy Pelosi as an ‘Icon of American Politics’ as She Announces Retirement

The San Francisco Representative announced on Thursday that former Speaker of the House will not run for re-election to Congress and plans to retire at the end of her current term in early 2027.
“For many years, I have valued the honor of representing our splendid city in the United States Congress,” Pelosi stated in a message addressed to San Francisco. “With a sense of gratitude, I anticipate my last year serving as your devoted Representative.”
Pelosi has represented San Francisco since 1987. Her historic achievement as the first—and sole—female Speaker of the House in 2007 solidified her status as a formidable Democratic leader in Congress.
The 85-year-old revealed her decision to retire in a video that showcased significant legislative successes, including the enactment of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), efforts to combat the HIV/AIDS crisis, and laws addressing infrastructure and climate change. Her retirement announcement comes shortly after a California ballot initiative passed, enabling the state to redetermine its congressional districts to increase Democratic representation in the House—a cause Pelosi actively supported.
Subsequent to Pelosi’s declaration, her Democratic colleagues have responded to the news, honoring her nearly four decades of service.
Former President Joe Biden referred to Pelosi as the “greatest Speaker of the House in American history” and mentioned this was his reason for presenting her with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2024.
“During my presidency, we collaborated to expand our economy, generate millions of jobs, and implement monumental investments in the nation’s prospects,” Biden stated. “She has committed a significant portion of her life to this country, and the United States will perpetually be appreciative.”
Former President Barack Obama echoed Biden’s sentiments regarding Pelosi, praising her leadership, camaraderie, and effectiveness in bringing together lawmakers to enact legislation.
“She instilled pride in us as Democrats,” Obama remarked, then extended his best wishes to the former House Speaker and her husband, Paul, for their forthcoming stage of life.
California State Senator Scott Wiener, who declared his candidacy for Pelosi’s seat last month, commended the Representative for her “decades of brave and unwavering service to our nation.”
“Speaker Emerita Pelosi transcends the role of a mere legislator—she is a symbol of American politics,” Wiener stated. “She spearheaded the battle for healthcare and decisively defeated Trump’s attempts to revoke it.”
California Governor Gavin Newsom, a long-standing acquaintance of Pelosi’s, offered his congratulations to the former Speaker on this “new phase” of her existence.
“Nancy Pelosi has motivated numerous generations. Her bravery and commitment to San Francisco, California, and our country have established the benchmark for public service. Her influence on this nation is unparalleled,” Newsom stated.
California Senator Adam Schiff praised Pelosi, whom he described as a mentor and friend, for her congressional achievements and her role in advancing significant progressive legislation. Schiff emphasized Pelosi’s leadership in promoting “human rights and democracy” internationally, describing her as an “illuminating presence” for himself and others.
“California will not witness another advocate as dedicated, as competent, and as imbued with the progressive ethos as Nancy Pelosi. Not for a considerable period. And I anticipate observing what she will achieve during her remaining tenure in Congress and beyond,” he commented.
Pennsylvania Representative Brendan Boyle expressed gratitude to Pelosi for her contributions, labeling her the “greatest Speaker of the House ever.”
Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar characterized Pelosi as a “pioneer” and a “formidable advocate,” whose “contributions have positively transformed America.”
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries offered comparable backing for Pelosi, stating that she “deeply enriched” him with her wisdom.
“Her life’s pursuits have consistently been guided by her steadfast faith, profound patriotism, and conviction that our Republic merits preservation,” Jeffries remarked concerning Pelosi’s impact.
Pelosi was the individual to hold the designation of House Minority Leader prior to Jeffries assuming the position in 2023.
Adelita Grijalva, the Representative-elect for Arizona’s 7th district, extended her gratitude to Pelosi for her assistance during a challenging personal period: the death of her father.
“Nancy Pelosi broke through barriers, advocated for healthcare, championed LGBTQ+ rights, and governed with bravery and foresight. When my father, Congressman Grijalva, died, she provided immediate support,” Grijalva stated. “We appreciate you, Speaker Pelosi, for your dedication to the citizens of San Francisco and our country.”
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro also posted a tribute to Pelosi, noting her actions after the April 2025 arson incident at his residence.
“Following the assault on our household, the Speaker was present at Pope Leo’s enthronement and offered a prayer for our family—prayers that our family reciprocated for her when aggression impacted her own home,” he recounted.
In 2022, an individual unlawfully entered Pelosi’s California residence and assaulted her husband, Paul, with a hammer, causing a skull fracture and head injuries. The perpetrator, subsequently condemned to life imprisonment without parole, had been seeking the former Speaker upon gaining entry to the dwelling.
