On Wednesday, Israel announced it had initiated “renewed enforcement of the cease-fire due to Hamas’ violations,” following a day of airstrikes that resulted in over 100 Palestinian deaths in Gaza, as reported by health officials.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stated that the strikes, executed on Tuesday under Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s directives, aimed at Hamas commanders and locations the military characterized as “positions of ongoing threat.” Gaza’s Health Ministry reported at least , with 46 children among the deceased, and 253 individuals sustained injuries.

The IDF further indicated that the operation “hit 30 terrorists in command positions,” which occurred after what it termed “Hamas violations” of the cease-fire agreement.

On Tuesday, Netanyahu had “forceful strikes” against Gaza, alleging that Hamas had committed a “clear violation” of the truce. This escalation followed Israel’s assertion that the remains of an Israeli hostage by Hamas were not those of an individual included in the cease-fire agreement. Netanyahu’s office identified the body as Ofir Tzarfati, whose remains were by Israeli forces in November 2023, with further fragments discovered in March 2024.

The IDF informed TIME that Hatem Maher Mousa Qudra, a Hamas commander whom Israel claims orchestrated an attack on Kibbutz Ein Hashlosha during Hamas’s Oct. 7, 2023, assault on Israel, was among those fatalities in Tuesday’s strikes.

Netanyahu also announced the overnight death of an Israeli soldier, Major Sgt. Effie Feldbaum. “He sacrificed his life for the security of Israel,” the prime minister .

Israel’s strikes represented the most lethal night in Gaza since the cease-fire commenced on Oct. 10, a delicate truce frequently tested by reciprocal allegations of breaches. Gaza’s Health Ministry reported that have now died in Israeli strikes since Oct. 11.

Lacking independent monitoring on the ground, the ministry serves as the main provider of casualty data used by humanitarian organizations, journalists, and international agencies. Its statistics do not distinguish between civilians and combatants and cannot be independently confirmed by TIME.

Israeli attacks on Gaza in violation of the ceasefire

Dr. Hasan AlShaer, the medical director of the Shifa Medical Complex in Gaza City, informed TIME that in the last 24 hours, 20 fatalities and 50 injured individuals from the recent strikes had arrived at the hospital. “More than 100 people have perished here since the cease-fire commenced—with at least a quarter being children,” AlShaer stated in a communication distributed by the charity Medical Aid for Palestinians. “We anticipate authentic pressure will be applied to the Israeli government to implement a true cease-fire, unblock the crossings, and furnish the medical equipment and provisions required by hundreds of thousands of injured persons.”

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported that over 600,000 Palestinians have relocated within Gaza since the truce started, with approximately 80% going back to the north after earlier displacement directives. “Deadly occurrences have been documented as those returning try to remove debris from damaged residences in the north,” , “highlighting the critical requirement for emergency shelter provisions to offer families a secure substitute.”

In a statement issued Wednesday, Hamas alleged that Israel was trying to jeopardize the cease-fire agreement. “The deceptive escalation against our populace in Gaza demonstrates a clear Israeli aim to establish new realities through coercion,” the group declared. Hamas additionally accused the United States of “complicity” in the strikes, claiming the Trump Administration maintains a “biased stance” even as the group asserts it remains “committed to the cease-fire.”

Israel has charged Hamas with orchestrating a fraudulent recovery of remains in Gaza, which was meant to fulfill its duty to return the bodies of Israeli hostages— remain unaccounted for.

Shosh Bedrosian, a spokesperson for Netanyahu’s office, asserted that a video depicts Hamas fighters disposing of Tzarfati’s body before handing it over to Red Cross officials. “They deceived Israel, they deceived President Trump, they deceived the United States, and they deceived the world,” Bedrosian stated.

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) indicated that its personnel had no knowledge of how the body was handled prior to the handover. “It is intolerable that a fraudulent recovery was arranged when the maintenance of this agreement is so crucial, and when numerous families are still eagerly anticipating information about their relatives,” .

The Hostages and Missing Families Forum Hamas’s conduct, labeling it “yet another act of deceit and barbarity intended to torment the families and undermine the agreement.”
