Everyone is screaming about what AI will do to humans in the future. Half the graduation speeches this spring called for fear of AI erasing humanity. The other half called for blind hope that human creativity can never be replaced. Both sides got standing ovations, and both ended with the same generic advice. Stay curious, stay human. No one is asking the question that actually matters. What has AI already done to how you see yourself? What does it already make you believe you are?
We don’t have to wait for AI to change us. It already has. We already live in an augmented world. GPS reroutes you before you even notice you’re lost. Autocomplete finishes your sentences before you type the whole thing. Algorithms pick your news, your music, and even the products you end up buying. AI summarizes your emails and schedules your meetings. Your social media feed decides what makes you angry before you finish your morning coffee. All this happens before you even think about it.
Right now, most AI discourse focuses on attention. People worry about distraction and AI killing creativity. The wellness crowd pushes back with digital detoxes, meditation apps and podcasts about the joy of boredom. My friends even have a group chat called “hardcore chill” to swap relaxation tricks. The instinct to step back is right, but the fix is useless. Researchers already found people use AI-favored words like “delve” “realm” in daily speech without noticing. A weekend off your phone doesn’t undo years of algorithmic shaping of your thoughts and beliefs.
Mass media used to shape a whole generation at once. When I was young, shows like Saved by the Bell, Dawson’s Creek, and Beverly Hills 90210 told all of us what we should look and act like. Now, it’s totally different. AI shapes every single person one by one. It calibrates content just for you, to keep you scrolling 24/7. Most people consume 13 hours of this content every day. AI builds this content around your insecurities, your fears and your wants, to make a profit. We have no idea what that does to us over time.
Humans have always craved self-understanding. We check horoscopes. We take personality quizzes. We even sort ourselves into Hogwarts houses online, just to get a label for who we are. Every year, millions of us obsess over our Spotify Wrapped. It’s an algorithm-generated portrait of who you supposedly are. Most of us trust this portrait more than our own self-reflection. We outsource the question of who we are to big tech companies, instead of looking for the answer inside ourselves.
Most people will never realize their identity was built for them by AI algorithms.
