Trump Boasts About Achievements and Expresses Resentments in a Disorganized Speech to White House Press

On Tuesday, President Donald Trump gave a rambling and complaint – filled speech in a crowded White House Press Briefing room. He spoke for more than an hour to commemorate the one – year anniversary of his return to office before answering reporters’ questions.
The speech began with Trump defending the thousands of federal officers he had dispatched to Minnesota to conduct extensive immigration searches. The President slowly showed one photo after another of immigrants he said were arrested in the state after committing atrocious crimes.
He soon brought up dozens of other topics. He insisted again on something (the text seems incomplete here), praised the effects of his tariffs and his Administration’s slashing of investments in low – carbon emissions technologies, joked that the Gulf of Mexico should be named the Gulf of Trump, and blamed many of the country’s problems on Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. He also said he “felt really bad” about something (the text seems incomplete here) by an ICE officer in Minnesota.
Trump frequently strayed far from policy or political topics. At one point, he told a story from his childhood about playing in a park next to a mental institution and his mother telling him he could have become a professional baseball player.
He also disparaged many of those he considered his enemies. He called former Justice Department prosecutor Jack Smith, who charged him for his attempts to overturn the 2020 election results, “a sick son of a bitch,” and said of Rep. Ilhan Omar, “I can’t stand her.”
Overhanging Trump’s appearance were his dropping approval ratings and his increasing frustration that the American public hasn’t supported the way he has implemented his policies. In particular, he claimed that the success of his strict immigration policies hasn’t been recognized by Americans. “Maybe I have bad public relations staff, but we’re not getting the message across,” Trump said.
Before Trump entered the briefing room, White House press aides distributed a press release titled “365 WINS IN 365 DAYS: President Trump’s Return Marks New Era of Success, Prosperity.” Trump had a printed copy in his hand when he approached the microphone.
After speaking for an hour and 20 minutes, Trump started taking questions from reporters. With a flick of his wrist, Trump pointed at reporters, answering questions from well – established media organizations such as ABC News and the Associated Press, as well as from reporters of right – wing organizations, some of whom quickly complimented him. He predicted that “things will turn out very well” in his effort to annex Greenland despite the objections of Denmark and U.S. allies in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. When asked whether the U.S. would… (the text seems incomplete here) over his pursuit of owning Greenland, he said: “Whether you like it or not, NATO is only as good as we are.” One reporter asked Trump if God would be proud of his first year in office. In response, Trump said: “God is proud of the work I’ve done.”
Trump seemed especially focused on changing the persistent perception among Americans that his policies haven’t helped them economically. “I think we’ve done a much better job than we can promote.” That’s “one of the reasons I’m holding this news conference – I think it’s important – we’ve taken a chaotic situation and made it better,” Trump said.
Something (the text seems incomplete here) shows that economic confidence has declined in recent months. Gallup surveys in November and December found that 36% of Americans approved of the job Trump was doing, down from 45% after his first month back in office. Among modern presidents, only Richard Nixon – who had 30% approval in December 1973 during the Watergate investigation and an energy crisis – had a lower poll rating than Trump at this stage of their second term.
Trump addressed the press just before he was about to leave for Davos, Switzerland, where he was scheduled to give a… (the text seems incomplete here) at the… (the text seems incomplete here).
