Trump’s California Vote Cheating Rant Isn’t About This Primary — It’s a 2026 Playbook Test

(SeaPRwire) –

Trump’s latest claims of California Democratic vote cheating have nothing to do with the state’s ongoing primary results. He’s not advocating for his endorsed Republican candidates out of some sense of loyalty. These comments are a deliberate, pre-planned talking point to push his national anti-mail voting agenda. He doesn’t need evidence of fraud to win over the core audience he’s targeting with his Truth Social posts.

As of Thursday morning, only 56% of California’s primary ballots have been counted. Trump-backed gubernatorial candidate Steve Hilton holds 27.6% of the vote, leading Democratic candidate Xavier Becerra’s 25.6% share. Incumbent LA Mayor Karen Bass has already advanced to the November runoff, becoming the first sitting mayor since 2005 to miss the 50% threshold to avoid a runoff. Trump claimed an LA US Attorney’s office investigation is underway, but no proof of the probe or fraud exists.
California uses a top-two jungle primary system, so the two highest vote-getters advance to the general election regardless of party. All registered state voters receive a mail-in ballot automatically. Any ballot postmarked by Election Day and received within seven days will be counted. The state took nearly a full month to finish counting votes in 2024, delaying national House control results by a week. Newsom signed a bill last week to strengthen state voting safeguards against federal interference.
Trump has pushed election denial narratives for years, starting with his false claims the 2020 presidential election was stolen from him. That rhetoric directly led to the January 6, 2021 Capitol riot by his supporters. Since retaking office last year, restricting mail-in voting has been one of his top domestic policy priorities. His proposed SAVE America Act would impose strict voter ID rules and curtail mail-in voting access, but it has failed to gain enough Senate support to advance.
Newsom’s press office fired back almost immediately after Trump posted his claims. The official statement called Trump a liar, and joked someone should take his phone away and put him to sleep. National Democratic groups are already fundraising off Trump’s comments, framing them as a direct attack on voting rights across the U.S. Republican operatives are using the moment to test anti-mail voting messaging for 2026 swing state legislative races.
Trump will issue an executive order targeting state mail-in voting rules within two weeks if California’s final primary results favor Democratic candidates.
