This year marks the Winter Olympics’ return to Italy after a 20-year absence. In the years ahead, the Games will deliver new victories and defeats on familiar territory, spanning from France to the United States.

Since their debut in Chamonix, France, in 1924, the Winter Games have been staged across 13 different countries over more than a century. Two Italian cities will co-host the 2026 Winter Games: Milan, which is receiving this honor for the first time, and Cortina d’Ampezzo, which has become just the fourth city to host the Winter Olympics more than once.

Additional host cities for future Winter Games have already been announced, with another set to join the exclusive list of cities that have hosted the Winter Olympics twice. Here’s where the Games are heading next.

2030

The 2030 Winter Olympics will be held in the French Alps from February 1-17, marking France’s fourth time hosting the Winter Games. France has also hosted three Summer Games, all in Paris.

“The vision of the Games is to unite the north and south French Alps and make them a hub for winter sport,” according to the official website for the 2030 Games. That year’s competitions will take place within part of the planet’s largest interconnected ski area, spanning approximately 600 km. Olympic events will be staged in Haute-Savoie, Savoie, Briançon, and Nice.

2034

Utah is scheduled to host the 2034 Winter Olympics from February 10-26. The state capital, Salt Lake City, will serve as the central hub for the Games, having previously hosted in 2002, though competitions will also be held in surrounding communities, per official statements. The upcoming Games will utilize exclusively pre-existing or temporary venues, including several from 2002, according to official reports.

The 2034 Games will represent the fifth occasion that the United States has hosted the Winter Olympics. The nation has also hosted four Summer Olympics and will host a fifth in 2028 when the Games return to Los Angeles.

2038 and 2042

Host cities for the 2038 and 2042 Games have not yet been selected, though the International Olympic Committee (IOC) is in discussions with Switzerland about potentially hosting the 2038 Games.
