(SeaPRwire) – Following a physical examination at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center on Tuesday, President Donald Trump provided a brief update to the public, stating that “everything” had “checked out PERFECTLY.”
It remains uncertain which specific details from this visit will be disclosed to the American public.
Speculation regarding Trump’s health has persisted for some time and has grown more intense in the months since he returned to the White House last year. The President, who is approaching 80, became the oldest individual ever elected to the office.
The White House announced earlier this month that Trump would soon undergo his annual preventive medical and dental examination. This Tuesday visit represents the fourth known medical check-up of Trump’s second term.
Trump’s predecessor, former President Joe Biden, also faced extensive rumors about his health. This was especially true during the final months of his presidency, following a disastrous debate performance against Trump that triggered intense scrutiny. Biden eventually suspended his reelection campaign as concerns about his age mounted.
When faced with such inquiries, it falls to Trump, Biden, and their predecessors to decide the extent of the health information they release. Consequently, Trump will once again be the one to decide what information regarding his recent medical appointment is shared.
The reasons are as follows.
Presidents are under no legal obligation to disclose their health records
No constitutional or federal law mandates that American Presidents must make their medical records public. Furthermore, like all other U.S. citizens, Presidents are protected by medical privacy laws, specifically the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
Typically, any information that is released to the public is shared by the White House with the President’s permission.
“Currently, the law mandates that a President’s physician maintain the President’s confidentiality, leaving the decision of what to disclose up to the President,” explains M. Sara Rosenthal, a bioethics professor at the University of Kentucky.
She observes that the American public may not be content with this arrangement.
“I believe the public feels they are entitled to know the health status of their current President,” Rosenthal states.
Historically, several Presidents have hidden serious health conditions. For instance, Woodrow Wilson’s administration went to great lengths to keep the severity of his condition secret after he suffered a severe stroke while in office.
According to Rosenthal, concerns about the health of Presidents have escalated in recent years.
“This has emerged as a problem as Presidents have grown older,” she remarks. Rosenthal notes that former Presidents Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and Barack Obama were all younger than 65 when they left office. Conversely, Biden was 82 when his term ended in January 2025, and Trump will be turning 80 next month.
Questions regarding Biden’s health during his presidency and his unsuccessful reelection campaign—specifically concerning how much he and his staff concealed about his capacity to serve another term—continue to face intense scrutiny long after his departure from the White House.
A revealing book published last year, Original Sin: President Biden’s Decline, Its Cover-Up, and His Disastrous Choice to Run Again by Axios’ Alex Thompson and CNN’s Jake Tapper, contained numerous details regarding Biden’s purported cognitive deterioration and the measures taken by his staff to assist him. This has fueled ongoing questions and criticisms. Following Trump’s return to the presidency, Republicans—who have alleged that Biden, his aides, and journalists concealed his decline—have initiated several investigations into how the White House managed Biden’s health information.
Trump, meanwhile, dismissed broad demands to make his medical records public during his campaign, despite questions about his physical and mental fitness for office at his age. He has kept details about his health largely private.
An Axios-Ipsos poll from last summer revealed that over 70% of Americans think most politicians are dishonest regarding their health, and almost three-quarters support a law requiring the sitting President to release their medical records.
Recent polls indicate public worry regarding Trump’s health
Trump and the White House have asserted that he is in excellent health. Prior to Tuesday’s visit, White House spokesperson Davis Ingle stated to The Associated Press that Trump “is the sharpest and most accessible President in American history,” further noting that “he remains in excellent health.”
However, polls indicate that Americans are growing more worried about the President’s health. A Washington Post-ABC News-Ipsos poll released earlier this month found that approximately 59% of Americans doubt Trump possesses the mental sharpness required to serve effectively, and 55% do not believe his physical health is sufficient. The Post noted that these figures represent a small rise from a similar February survey and a significant increase from one conducted in September.
An Economist/YouGov poll from last month showed that roughly 48% of U.S. adults consider Trump too old for the White House, compared to 40% who believe he is not too old. The same poll indicated that more Americans perceive Trump as undergoing some form of cognitive or physical decline than those who do not. Additionally, a Reuters/Ipsos poll from February reported that 61% of respondents believe the President “has become erratic with age.”
Last summer, the White House disclosed that Trump had been diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency after observing swelling in his legs. This non-life-threatening condition happens when leg veins have difficulty returning blood to the heart. Experts consulted by TIME stated that the condition is common and not hazardous. While untreated cases can lead to complications, Trump’s physician reported last year that the President displayed no signs of such issues.
