The myth that a dog’s mouth is cleaner than a human’s has circulated for decades. You’ve probably repeated it yourself. It is completely baseless. That does not make it scientifically defensible.
Let us look at what the actual guidance says versus what most pet owners believe. The myth claims dogs are “10 times cleaner.” The expert consensus says a dog’s mouth, like a person’s, is full of bacteria. Capnocytophaga canimorsus is a species commonly found in dogs. Most of the time, it does not cause problems. But when saliva reaches a bite, an open cut, or a mucous membrane, the risk shifts dramatically. The infection can progress to sepsis. It can be fatal. That is the factual record. The myth is not.
The behavioral compliance gap here is enormous. Most people treat their dogs like toddlers and allow unrestricted face contact. Especially before eating. That is the correct protocol in a single sentence. Keep the affection. Add the hygiene discipline. Everything else is negligence.

Those with alcohol-use disorder. For these groups, a simple lick is not a casual moment. It is a measurable health event. The guidance is clear: keep dogs away from the face and mouth. Do not let them lick open wounds. Consult a physician if you fall into a vulnerable category. For healthy adults and children, the risk remains low. Occasional contact is fine. That distinction matters. It should be the opening line of any responsible pet-owner guide.
Now consider the broader category of animal hygiene guidance. Cats introduce a different vector entirely. They carry Pasteurella multocida. On intact skin, this is mostly harmless. The real concern is the bite. A cat tooth is narrow and sharp. It punctures. It injects bacteria deep into tissue. What looks like a pinprick is often a deep wound. Immediate washing with soap and running water is critical. So is seeing a medical provider. Disinfectants are not the answer here. Running water is what matters. Ticks are another category worth examining carefully. Dogs and cats bring them indoors. Ticks hide in ears, under front legs, and other hard-to-reach spots on pets.
