Barry Cervantes: Promoting Asean identity through art

BARRY “Bry” Cervantes, a Bacolod-based multi-disciplined artist, invaded the international art competition dubbed the 3rd Asean Graphic Arts Competition and Exhibition.The theme, “Asean: Identity – Art – Solidarity – Development” is part of its initiatives to promote the Asean identity.It was held in line with Vietnam’s Asean Chairmanship spearheaded by the country’s Department of Fine Arts, Photography and Exhibition, International Cooperation Department- Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.The National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) had announced in Manila that the Embassy of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam is inviting the Filipino Visual Artists to participate in the 3rd Asean Graphic Arts Competition and Exhibition.The foregoing cultural event aims to create a forum for graphic artists in the Asean Member States (AMS) to exchange and introduce new printmaking artworks in the Asean region as well as the culture, people, and life of each member country in a solid and dynamic community.”It helps a lot in many ways, exposure and experience-wise, how to push myself and my art-making, exploring new mediums is always exciting and motivates me to be open for more possibilities,” Cervantes said of his international exposure.For him, art is a never-ending challenge and learning it is an integral part of my survival as an artist, not limiting myself to new ideas and techniques is always part of my process.He said this competition and exhibition carry that kind of philosophy that made him want to join and push himself and my passion for Digital Art and Printmaking, as a traditional Artist/Painter, it was an exciting goal to pursue beyond his comfort zone.Due to the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) pandemic, they were unable to invite them to come to Vietnam to attend the opening ceremony.“I did not bag the major awards but as one of the finalists for the Asean country and representing the Philippines on an international stage it is more than enough to be proud of,” Cervantes said.Cervantes studied Fine Arts Major in Advertising at La Consolacion College Bacolod City and is currently working as a freelance graphic designer while doing art exhibitions and collaborations with Local and National Artists and Galleries focusing on Visual Arts and Design, a co-owner of Greyroom Cafe and Art Space Under Orange Project in Art District Bacolod City.His current Affiliation are Art Heals Fundraising/Viva Excon Bacolod Secretariat for Marketing and Promotions, so-founder of Raketier.com, a Canadian-based NFT Art company with several projects managed and co-produced like Senshi SOC and TAR “The Ascendant Ring” and Whimzy Chameleon NFT.
