Ipatatawag ng Senado ang Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) at Commission on Higher Education (CHED) dahil sa hindi pagsunod sa international standard sa pagsasanay ng marinong Pinoy.

Nitong Martes, naghain si Senador Risa Hontiveros ng Senate Resolution No. 279 na naglalayong mapaganda ang standard ng maritime education sa Pilipinas na matagal na umanong pinupuna ng European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) mula pa noong taong 2016.

Sa EMSA 2020 assessment, nakasaad umano na hindi sinisiguro ng Marina at Ched na ang mga pagsasanay ay nakakatugon sa standard na ipinatutupad ng International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping for Seafarers o STCW Convention.

“[Labing-anim] na taon na pala tayong binibigyan ng warning. It’s high time we summon Marina and Ched to the Senate para maaksyunan na itong mga reporma. They need to show Congress that they are taking definite steps to resolve this issue,” sabi ni Hontiveros sa isang statement.

“One of the shortcomings listed was that kahit program design ng maritime courses hindi pa na-finalize ng Ched. This is one of our most important industries, dapat may sense of urgency. We need to honor our commitments under the STCW Convention. This will also help us maintain our status in the IMO whitelist,” aniya.

Isinulong ni Hontiveros ang pagdinig matapos maiulat na 50,000 Pinoy seafarer na nagtatrabaho sa mga European vessel ang nanganganib mawalan ng trabaho dahil bigo ang Pilipinas na makapasa sa EMSA evaluation sa loob ng 16 taon. (Dindo Matining)
