New DEI Self-Guide Book for Individuals

A new book provides a judgement-free space for self-reflection, empathy, and understanding of others.
Boston, Massachusetts — March 3, 2026 — Lately, there have been numerous conversations and news stories about diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), but most dialogue and articles have focused on organizations: whether they’re invested in DEI or pulling back. A new book titled Self-Guide to DEI: Understanding Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at the Workplace focuses entirely on the individual.
Instead of complex theories or concepts, the book uses simple prompts to guide individual readers through their own workplace experiences and how those experiences might differ from others’. It gently meets readers where they are and, without judgment, helps them gain a better understanding of workplace dynamics and how to make the workplace more comfortable and successful for all.
“Even though the book is just 64 pages, it took two years to write. It’s meant to be a conversation between the reader and me,” says author Su Joun. “It aims to de-mystify and simplify the topics of equity, equality, inclusion, psychological safety, belonging, and diversity one person at a time. After all, DEI is personal—not political. It’s about people, not politics.”
Su Joun drew on decades of senior leadership experience across multiple industries and consulting with hundreds of organizations on boosting workforce success and emotional safety. Self-Guide to DEI compiles real voices and stories from thousands of professionals Su has encountered over the years to give readers a personal and authentic way to explore identity, empathy, and everyday actions they can take to make work more fair and inclusive.
Some early feedback about the book includes:
- It’s straightforward, clear, and feels true. This workbook requires little effort but delivers big results.
- The book offers excellent “small actions for big impact” that people can use to change their own daily behaviors and inspire change in others.
- This book is thought-provoking. It was definitely more engaging than I expected.
- This should be required reading for managers and anyone seeking career growth. Most people want to act equitably and inclusively, yet the defunding of many employer DEI programs has left countless workers unable to deepen their understanding and build their skills.
