Thieves Steal Renoir, Cézanne, and Matisse Paintings in a Three‑Minute Heist

(SeaPRwire) –   According to police on Monday, thieves executed a three-minute art heist, making off with paintings by Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Paul Cézanne, and Henri Matisse valued in the millions of euros from a private Italian museum.

The crime occurred late in the evening on March 22 at the Magnani Rocca Foundation, a private art museum in the countryside near Parma.

In a statement to the Italian media outlet SkyTG24, the museum characterized the robbery as “structured and organized,” adding that the heist was “not completed” because of a swift response from authorities.

No suspects have been apprehended, and the museum continues to operate during its normal hours. Italy’s Carabinieri and the Cultural Heritage Protection Unit of Bologna are leading the investigation.

This incident comes after a major theft at the Louvre museum in Paris last October, where thieves posing as construction workers stole jewels worth approximately $100 million. Multiple arrests were made in connection with that heist within weeks.

Here are the key details about the Italian museum robbery and the stolen artworks.

How the heist unfolded

The museum informed SkyTG24 that masked intruders broke into the Magnani Rocca villa at night by forcing open the entrance door.

Local media reports that once inside, the thieves removed three paintings from a French art gallery on the museum’s first floor. However, the theft appears to have been cut short when the security alarm was triggered; the Italian outlet La Repubblica stated that a fourth artwork was left behind after the alarm sounded.

According to TGR, the regional broadcaster that first broke the news, the thieves then escaped through the museum gardens by climbing over a fence.

The entire burglary, from entry to escape, reportedly lasted only three minutes.

A police spokesperson told CNN that the museum decided to keep the robbery secret from the public initially, hoping to capture the thieves if they came back.

What the thieves stole

The stolen paintings are reported to be Renoir’s “Les Poissons,” Cézanne’s “Still Life With Cherries,” and Matisse’s “Odalisque on the Terrace.”

According to the BBC, the combined estimated value of the artworks is about 9 million euros, which is roughly $10.3 million.

Renoir, a leading Impressionist painter, created “Les Poissons” in oil on canvas in 1917. Italian media estimates this single painting is worth about $7 million.

Cézanne, a celebrated Post-Impressionist, finished the watercolor “Still Life With Cherries” around 1890; it was one of several still life pieces he painted featuring cherries. Matisse, the pioneering leader of the brief but influential Fauvism movement, painted the “Odalisque on the Terrace” in 1922.

While all three stolen works are by French artists, the Magnani Rocca Foundation’s collection includes art from around the world, ranging from the Renaissance to modern times.

Luigi Magnani, an art critic who opened his estate and private collections to the public in 1990, founded the museum. He passed away in 1984 at the age of 78.
