(AsiaGameHub) – Bangladesh is set to overhaul its gambling legislation by replacing the 1867 Gambling Act with a modern legal framework designed to reinforce the nation’s prohibition on betting and online gambling.
Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed revealed the initiative during a speech at the Bangladesh Secretariat Reporters Forum (BSRF), as reported by state-run BSS News.
He described the growing prevalence of online gambling as a “major threat” to the country’s economy, social stability, and youth, emphasizing that current laws are inadequate to tackle technology-based betting operations.
Minister Salahuddin Ahmed stated:
The drafting of the new legislation is in its final phase, and the bill will be presented during the next parliamentary session for approval.
The proposed reform would supplant a law over 150 years old, aligning Bangladesh’s legal system with contemporary digital challenges and enforcement needs.
Officials indicate that the revised law aims to equip authorities with clearer legal mechanisms to counter online gambling platforms and enhance action against unlawful betting activities.
Under existing law, gambling is broadly banned in Bangladesh, with only narrow exceptions such as state-sanctioned lotteries and wagering on specific horse racing events.
The government’s recent decision reflects an intent to tighten these prohibitions and explicitly include online and technology-driven gambling platforms within their scope.
