FOLLOWING the allegations that illegal drug trade is rampant at the Metro Bacolod District Jail (MBDJ) in Bacolod City, the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) in Western Visayas has sent a four-man team at the facility to conduct an investigation.BJMP – Western Visayas spokesperson Jairus Anthony Dogelio told SunStar Bacolod that they have instructed their investigators to coordinate with the Bacolod City Police Office, especially with Major Joerey Puerto of Police Station 8.Puerto had earlier claimed that the drug suspect they arrested with P1.3 million worth of suspected shabu claimed that someone from the jail is giving them instructions.Dogelio said that the investigation would determine the lapses or involvement of their personnel, if there are any, as he stressed that, “we are not tolerating this irregularity and we are now taking steps to curb this (illegal activity).”Asked if there is a need to temporarily relieve some personnel while the investigation is ongoing, he said it would not be that easy since they need a clearance from the Commission on Elections (Comelec) before doing so.“But we are coordinating with the Comelec in case there is a need to (temporarily relieve the personnel),” Dogelio added.Since this is not the first time that allegations of illegal drug trade are rampant at the MBDJ, the BJMP official in the region said they will also look into the possibility that its warden, Chief Inspector Felix Sariana, had committed lapses. On February this year, five personnel of MBDJ were also relieved on the same allegations.*
