NEGROS Occidental Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson said Thursday, June 2, 2022, that the postponement of the barangay elections should not go more than a year.Lacson, however, said either to hold the barangay elections as rescheduled on December 5, 2022 or it will again be postponed does not matter to him because he could work with the barangay officials in the province.Proof to that, he said, is the financial assistance that they give to the barangays which he thinks they [barangay officials] are very appreciative of.Outgoing Senate President Vicente Sotoo III is not in favor of the postponement of the barangay elections this year, saying that the incumbent barangay officials are enjoying longer terms of office than the president. In 2016, the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections were postponed to 2018 while the following year, President Rodrigo Duterte signed a law moving the 2020 elections to December 5,2022.However, incoming House Speaker and Leyte Representative Martin Romualdez said the postponement of the December 2022 barangay polls would save P8 billion in funds. He said it could be used by the government for urgent matters, especially in relation to the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) pandemic.
